1 Peter 5:8 - Grace Overcoming Satan
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour"
1 Peter 5:8
While it is true that sometimes circumstances or even self can bring suffering and pain in our lives, there is also a chance that Satan will be allowed by the Lord to cause us affliction. In the book of Job, we learn that in order to show a great example of faithfulness in all things, God allowed the devil to cause affliction on Job.
That is why God tells us to be sober and vigilant because our enemy stalks us, ready to “devour” us. Either the devil, or a lesser evil spirit, can lie to us. The devil will promise the best, and give us the worst; he’ll promise honor, but give disgrace; he promises profit, but dishes out loss; he promises life, but instead we receive death. Satan’s promises are no good; he is not like our faithful, all knowing, all existing God!
Both James 4:7 and 1 Peter 5:9 tell us to resist the devil; we need not talk to him, fear him, or try to understand him. Instead, we simply need to go back to the Lord and ask Him to help us live a holy life. Furthermore, remember that God is the God of all grace. Rest in the loving arms of Jesus, and let Him worry about the enemy in your life. You keep steadfast in the faith, knowing that any wavering or hesitation can be overcome by our good and loving Shepherd.
