James 4:1-6 - Grace Overcoming Strife

When Mom asked her son why he was covered with so much dirt so early in the morning, the son replied, “I went to bed that way!”  

So too, many Christians live day to day never dealing with the many problems of their past.  Believers in the Bible had similar struggles; for instance, James points out in chapter 4 many “fightings” and “wars” (v. 1) which came about because they obsessed over wayward desires (or lust for any person, place, or prominence).  Any time we are willing to forsake loving God or serving others so we can fulfill a selfish desire, we will cause wars and fighting with the flesh.  Never believe for a moment that God gives us selfish desires because … He doesn't.  (James 4:5)


The way to overcome the “lusts of the flesh” is to “walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16-18).  This means to submit our wills and needs to the only One who can fulfill them.  Yup, if you are fulfilling the lusts of the flesh then you are not walking in the Spirit.  But, if you are walking in the Spirit, you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.  The good news:  God’s gives more grace for those who will humble themselves under His nail pierced hands!  (James 4:6)
