John 19 - The King of Kings Who Loved to be a Servant
"5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." Philippians 2:5-8
If you were tried based on false accusations, condemned based on phony court proceedings, and spit upon and mocked even though all you ever did was help other people – you would have something to complain about. The scales of justice would be turned the wrong way, and you would do everything you could to right what was wrong.
All of this happened to Jesus; yet, before anything else – He thought of the needs of others. Could it be that the purest Son of God willingly hung on the cross, being punished by his Father for the sins of the world, because we were in such a damnable state? Graham Kendrick’s song says, “My Lord, what love is this, That pays so dearly? That I, the guilty one, May go free!”
What was Jesus’s secret? Paul says he “took upon him the form of a servant” and “he humbled himself’. (Philippians 2) The sinless Lamb of God who could, at any time, call an army of angels to rescue Him instead was willingly crushed on the cross so we could enter into a relationship with Him.
It is not that Jesus never thought of himself; false humility claims we never think of ourselves. Jesus’s humility was genuine; He thought of others before He thought about Himself.
We are called to serve Jesus; we are called to serve others; then we are called to take care of ourselves – in that order. Let’s wash one another’s feet and lay down our lives for each other.
